Healthy hot chocolate

Who doesn’t love a warm, comforting mug of hot chocolate? This version skips the heavy sugar and instead combines protein-rich cow (or soy) milk, antioxidant-packed cacao, warming spices, and a touch of honey for gentle sweetness. It’s a balanced, nourishing snack that’s perfect for pregnant or breastfeeding mums. In fact, I often recommend it as a bedtime snack for women with gestational diabetes.

Ingredients

225 ml whole milk (or soy milk)

2 teaspoons of cacao powder

½ - 1 teaspoon honey or coconut sugar

¼ tsp spice (cinnamon, ginger or cardamom)

Pinch salt

Dash vanilla extract

Method

Heat milk in a small saucepan or milk frother. Add the cacao, honey, spices, salt and vanilla to a mug. Pour a small amount of hot milk into the mug and mix until everything is dissolved. Add the remaining milk and give one last stir.
